Protect – Victim Support and Legal Aid

Protection of victims is one of the pillars of the African Freedom of Religion or Belief Observatory (AFORBO). AFORBO stands with individuals and communities whose freedom of religion or belief has been violated, so that no victim is left alone, unheard or without access to justice.

Victim support

  • Listening to and documenting the testimonies of victims, survivors and affected communities, with full respect for confidentiality and safety.
  • Referral to trusted partners for psychosocial, humanitarian and pastoral support.
  • Accompaniment of affected communities through local religious leaders, civil society and AFORBO correspondents.

Legal aid

  • Guidance for victims towards competent national, regional and continental remedies.
  • Legal support to victims of violations through partnerships with lawyers, human-rights institutions and the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
  • Follow-up of emblematic cases with the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and relevant African Union organs.

How to request support

If you or your community have suffered a violation of freedom of religion or belief, please first report the case through our secure form (available in English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Kiswahili and Arabic under Monitor), then contact us, indicating that you are requesting victim support or legal aid.
