Tracking religious freedom across Africa through data, analysis, and field reports

Our Monitoring Approach

AFORBO collects and analyzes data on religious freedom through surveys, field research, and consultations with diverse stakeholders at the grassroots, national, regional, and continental levels. Our reports provide a comprehensive picture of challenges and progress in ensuring this fundamental right across Africa.

Legal Framework

Our monitoring work is grounded in key international and regional legal instruments:

  • Charter of the United Nations (1945) — Article 1(3) on promoting respect for human rights without distinction as to religion
  • Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) — Article 18 on freedom of thought, conscience, and religion
  • International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (1966) — Article 18 on the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion
  • 1981 UN Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Intolerance and Discrimination Based on Religion or Belief
  • African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Banjul Charter, 1981) — Article 8 on freedom of conscience and religion
