Advocacy
Championing policy change and legal reform for religious freedom across Africa
Our Advocacy Work
AFORBO provides evidence-based recommendations to governments, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), and the African Union. Our advocacy aims to foster environments where religious freedoms are protected and upheld within national, regional, and continental legal frameworks.
Operational Framework
Grassroots Level
Local religious communities designate trained focal persons for monitoring and reporting violations. Secure and anonymous channels allow individuals to report safely. Community leaders facilitate dialogue and mediation.
National Level
National Religious Freedom Observatories work with interfaith councils and Justice and Peace Commissions. We engage governments in aligning national laws with the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
Regional Level
Regional observatories within each Regional Economic Community (REC) consolidate national reports and provide regional analysis. Annual regional reports document trends and propose policy recommendations.
Continental Level
AFORBO advises the African Union Commission on policies to protect religious freedom. We collaborate with the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights and publish an Annual State of Religious Freedom Report.
